Profit First

Profit First Coaching From a Master Certified Profit First Professional

Most owners treat profit as whatever is left at the end of the month. Usually that is nothing. Profit First flips the order: you take profit first, and the business learns to run on what is left.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You're working harder than ever, but you can't tell where the profit went
  • Money's in the account one week and gone the next
  • You haven't taken a steady paycheck in months because the business eats it first
  • Tax bills catch you off guard, and you scramble to cover them
  • You're profitable on paper, but the bank account never shows it

What is Profit First, in one sentence?

Profit First is a cash management system, created by Mike Michalowicz, that changes the order of the formula you run your business on:

  • The usual way: Sales minus Expenses equals Profit. Profit is whatever is left over, which usually means nothing.
  • The Profit First way: Sales minus Profit equals Expenses. You take profit first, and the business runs on what is left.

That one change is the whole system. When profit comes out first, it happens. When it waits for the end of the month, it does not. The accounts, the percentages and the rhythm are how we make that change real in your business.

How does Profit First work day to day?

Instead of one bank account where everything blends together, your money gets divided on purpose every time it comes in. Each account has one job:

  • Income: everything you earn lands here first, then gets divided up.
  • Profit: your reward, set aside every time money comes in.
  • Owner's Pay: a real, consistent paycheck for you.
  • Tax: money for taxes, waiting before the bill arrives.
  • Operating Expenses: what is left runs the business, on purpose.

You pay yourself on a schedule instead of whatever is left over. Your taxes are set aside before the bill shows up. And every quarter you take your profit: a real distribution out of the business and into your pocket. Our guide to the Profit First bank accounts walks through each one.

What does a Master Certified Profit First Professional do differently?

Reading the book is the easy part. Setting the right percentages for your business, keeping the allocation rhythm going when a big bill lands, and adjusting as you grow is where most owners stall. That is the work I do with you.

I am a Master Certified Profit First Professional. In a video endorsement he recorded for Right Way Profits (you can watch it below), Mike Michalowicz says fewer than 100 individuals and teams have reached Master level. Profit First Professionals, the organization that certifies coaches, lists me as a Profit First Master certified coach.

How it works

How Profit First coaching starts

  1. Book a call

A 45-minute discovery call about where your cash goes today and what you want it to do.

  2. Set up your accounts and percentages

We open the accounts, set allocation percentages that fit your real numbers, and agree on a rhythm for moving money.

  3. Allocate, review, take profit

You allocate on schedule, we review together, and every quarter you take a profit distribution.

Who is Profit First coaching for?

Owners of service and trade businesses who make sales but rarely see profit in the bank, who do not pay themselves on a schedule, or who dread tax time. Profit First works best when the books underneath it are accurate, which is why my team can keep those for you too.

Prefer to learn the system yourself first? The Profit Revolution is my step-by-step Profit First course.

Who is the best Profit First coach for my business?

Pick a certified Profit First Professional, ask what level they hold, and ask whether they look at your actual books before telling you what they would do. A coach who also understands bookkeeping can spot where the numbers are wrong before the percentages are set.

Right Way Profits is led by Debbie DeKnight, a Master Certified Profit First Professional with more than 30 years in accounting. Her team keeps clients' books in QuickBooks Online, so the coaching and the bookkeeping match.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to open new bank accounts for Profit First?

Yes. The system relies on separate accounts so each dollar has one job: profit, owner's pay, tax and operating expenses, with income landing in its own account first. We set them up together.

How often do I take profit?

Every quarter. You take a real profit distribution out of the business, separate from your regular owner's pay.

Does Profit First replace my bookkeeper or accountant?

No. It is a cash management system that sits on top of accurate books. Your accountant still files your taxes, and Profit First makes sure the tax money is already set aside.

What is the difference between Profit First coaching and the course?

Coaching is one-to-one: I set the system up with you and keep you on track. The Profit Revolution is a self-paced course that teaches you to set it up yourself.

Who created Profit First?

Mike Michalowicz, in his book Profit First. Profit First Professionals is the organization that trains and certifies coaches like me.
